Mongol Civilization
Mongols
The Mongols are a playable civilization in Empires Apart. They are based on the Mongol Empire, the largest contiguous land empire in world history that dominated Asia in the 13th to 14th centuries. They emerged through a number of tribes united under Temujin, who assumed the name of Chinggis Khan after taking power. They rapidly grew through invasions in every direction, forging an empire from the Baltics and Turkey all the way to the Sea of Japan. After the death of Chinggis’s successor, Khubilai Khan, the empire splintered into four factions before fading away into history.
Gameplay
The Mongols are the most radically different civilization in Empires Apart, described as an aggressive nomadic civilization. First off, the Mongols completely lack many technologies, such as infantry, naval combat units, base defenses, economic upgrades, and most importantly farms. Arad instead drop off 30% of their wood gathering as food, resulting in a wood-focused economy when natural food supplies run out. Mongols buildings (and siege units) are built out of the Qara’utai Tergen, which unpack into buildings for free and can repack at will, allowing for a high amount of mobility. The Mongol Town Center, or the Ayil, can even be packed up and transported across the map when resources in their starting position run out. Qara’utai Tergen cost a single population each which disappears when the unit is packed up, and all Mongol buildings produce a small amount of population. This means a Mongol player must be careful not to frequently hit the population limit, in which case they must unpack a Qara’utai Tergen (possibly from dismantling another structure) into a cheap structure such as a Ger to increase their housing capacity, a rather inconvenient process.
The Mongols have only four non-siege combat units, all of which are cavalry and cavalry archers. Combined with their priest, the Idugan which provides their units with evasion and the Örtege which increases the speed of their mounted units, the Mongols focus on mobility and hit-and-run attacks supported by powerful siege units built out of their Qara’utai Tergen. With only one naval unit, the Teevriin Khulung and inability to gather fish nor counter enemy naval strategies, the Mongols are highly ineffective on naval maps. On the other hand, their land military units have the unique Bloodlust ability, which increases their damage and attack speed as long as they continue to kill enemies. The Mongol economy is weak but simple: their main resources are wood and gold for their cavalry archers and siege weapons, with a bit of food for their melee cavalry. Due to their lack of defenses, they only need 250 stone in the entire game for unlocking Advanced Economic Development, allowing them to effectively operate on only three resources. The Mongols are a very unique faction with strong bonuses and high mobility out of the gate but gradually gets weaker due to the massive holes in their technology tree if they can’t wrap up a match quickly.
