Rivals of Aether – Moonwalking 101 Guide

The Basics

Moonwalking is an advanced movement technique originating from Super Smash Bros. Melee. It is performed by inputting a dash in one direction, then hitting the opposite direction without moving through the center. This can be achieved with a very fast semicircle motion on the bottom half of the analog stick gate. Moonwalking causes the character to appear sliding backwards, transferring the initial dash momentum into a reverse dash.

The moonwalk of each character, ranked from best to worst:

  • Maypul
  • Sylvanos
  • Ori
  • Clairen
  • Zetterburn
  • Etalus
  • Forsburn
  • Kragg
  • Wrastor
  • Ranno
  • Orcane
  • Elliana
  • Absa

The Not-Basics

While moonwalking isn’t a particularly demanding tech, it has tight timing. This, to an extent, is lessened in RoA compared to SSBM.

Moonwalking is entirely dependant on the character’s inital dash speed and the time taken to move from one side of the analog stick to the other. The timing for controller and keyboard is different, and both yield different results. Controller users must move entirely across the lower (or upper half, if you have tap jump off) portion of their analog stick, while keyboard users simple have to press forward, down, and back in quick succession.

The Conclusion

This tech is really just to have fun and style on people, so don’t expect to get much mileage with this tech alone. But at least it looks cool, so go have fun with it. Let me know if I missed anything.
