Shenmue II – 100% Achievement Guide

This guide will be used to get all of the achievements for Shenmue II.

Other Shenmue Guides:

Bare-Bones Information

Shenmue II

At the beginning of the game, put money in the chest of the two musicians playing songs for travellers to get the achievement:

“Money for Nothing.”

The fortune-teller returns, and this time she’s pretty cute! Get your fortune told for $20 and you’ll get the achievement:

“Unexpected Visit.”

Her fortune states that you’re gonna lose all your money soon. This is the truth. So spend it on lighters, grab boxes, and capsule toys, because if you don’t, you’re gonna lose it all, and you can sell those later to minimize your losses. If you do spend it all to the point of where you have less than $50… When it’s stolen from you, you’ll get the achievement:

“Big Spender.”

When a guy stops you to take part in arm-wrestling, accept. Mash the kick button over and over and some directional buttons if needed after he yells fight, and you’ll definitely win. You gain $10, plus you get the achievement:

“Challenger.”

If you want to give it a shot, you can win attempt to win four more arm wrestling matches (or you can go elsewhere) and you’ll get the achievement:

“Strongarm.”

Press the button with the pencil icon, then press one of the buttons that has an X on it to get the achievement:

“Cartographer”

Make sure to succeed at the QTE event after you enter Pidgeon Park, because that will earn you an achievement:

“Slippery Like An Eel.”

After you get your bag back, you’ll earn the achievement:

“Baggage Claim.”

Exit left moving out of the Come Over Guest House and you’ll hear a guy wanting to straighten a sign. Do it, and you’ll get the achievement:

“Good Samaritan.”

After learning Iron Palm, you’ll get the achievement:

“Apprentice.”

At any time during this, at a price of 900 HKD together, you can get five moves, Stepping Strike, Oblique Air Kick, Twin Palm Thrust, Dragon Spin, and Double Storm Kick at Wise Men’s Kung Fu in the Wise Men’s Quarter. If you’re able to buy at least four of them now, you’ll unlock the achievement for knowing five moves:

“Adept.”

When you find out the identity of Lishao Tao, you will get the achievement:

“Never Assume.”

There are four game cabinet machines, but only two you can access right now:

Outrun and Space Harrier are in the Pine Arcade on the 1st floor of the Golden Quarter in Wan Chai.

If on Day 1 of carrying the books out, you manage to carry them all out, you will get a move scroll for Horseshoe Kick.

If on Day 2 of carrying the books out, you manage to carry them all out, you will be offered to learn the move Lunging Strike.

After catching three leaves, you get the achievement:

“Autumn in Wan Chai”.

After finding the slip of paper in the Wulinshu, go back to Zhousan at the Guang Martial Arts School. He will teach you the move “Wild Throw”. There’s only one opportunity to learn this, and you have to demonstrate mastery, so it would be wise to save beforehand. Mastering this move gets you the achievement:

“Back to School.”

If on Day 3 of carrying the books out, you manage to carry them all out, you will get a move scroll for Mantis Combo. If you’ve been following my guide to the letter, you’ll now have the achievement for ten moves learned:

“Expert.”

After learning about the Chawan Sign, you can come back to the Yan Tin Apartments to learn the move Hind Blow. This is done by pressing Dodge and Throw at the same time when you’re next to your opponent.

If on Day 4 of carrying the books out, you manage to carry them all out, you will get a move scroll for Diagonal Wipe.

If you’re actually trying to get all the moves like I recommended, make sure you don’t have 500 HKD or more when you start looking for Ren.

After you’re told to get 500 HKD to meet Ren, go down to the cargo-carrying minigame and complete it to learn the move Brawling Uppercut after it’s over. This one is a bit tricky.

After falling off the roof with Ren, you’ll get the achievement:

“Another Fine Mess”.

When the game tells you to say goodbye to people, say goodbye to Delin (your cargo-lifting buddy) behind Warehouse #1, Fangmei in Room 207 of Da Yuan Apartments and the four Wude teachers (Zhousan is at Guang Martial Arts School in Green Market Plaza, Zhangyu is in Zhangyu Barber’s Hop in Lucky Charm Quarter on Three Blades Street, Jianmin is in Lotus Park in the South Carmain Quarter, and Guixiang is by the Yan Tin Apartments also in South Charmain Quarter.), and finish it off with Hanhui in the Temple and Lishao Tao behind it, and you’ll get an achievement:

“Sweet Sorrow”.

You’ll also learn the move Counter Elbow Assault.

Though this achievement is buggy, and could probably use a save before you actually do it, just in case, after leaving Wan Chai, you’ll get an achievement:

“Nomad.”

After going to Kowloon and getting shown by Ren to the spice shop and dealing with the owner, you can exit back to Dragon Road, which is where you came from. Go down the stairs, and once you reach the bottom, if you look to the left, there should be a set of stairs going up. You can follow these stairs to another Lucky Hit dealer who will give you the chance at two scrolls, but it’s kinda tricky.

It actually took me 38 tries to get both of them, but what I did for the first one was kept it all the way to the left, then the second one was all the way to the right, and the third I just kept in the middle. It eventually worked, but it can get tedious. The two scrolls are Heel Sweep and Monkey Roll Drop. After you win one or both of these, if you’ve been following this guide to the letter, you should have the achievement:

“Master”.

There are now two arcade machines in Kowloon to see which I will point out:
Afterburner is in the Tea Break/Phoenix building in Kowloon
Hang on is in Room #222 of the Yellow Head Building in Kowloon

You can now buy three move scrolls from Tiger’s Eye Military Surplus (Machinegun Fist, Rear Foot Sweep, Serpent Coil) for 950 HKD, and then Oblique Slam for 100 HKD in B.C. Military Surplus. There are also five other scrolls that you can buy in the latter, including the ones that you got from the book-carrying minigame. Both of these stores are on the first floor of Thousand White Building.

After you kick in Yuan’s door, you’ll unlock the achievement:

“Under Your Nose”

After solving the four key puzzle, you’ll get the achievement:

“5 Star General”.

After Ren shoots you down for not being able to enter the Yellow Head Building and suggests you try the Chawan Sign, do it in the Nihao Teahouse in Dumsum Qr. A note will be given to you to go to room 503 on the fifth floor of the Moon Child Building. By doing this, you will eventually learn a new move, Predictive Explosion.

When you start going against the three fighters you need to defeat, you’ll eventually go to fight Rob Stunt. On the first floor, you’ll find an Afterburner machine that will go toward your game achievement. It’s on your right when you pay to enter the Phoenix Building.

After meeting up with the scout on Dragon Street after you defeated all three targets, you’ll get the achievement:

“New Kid on the Block.”

When you reach the 2nd floor of the Yellow Head building, you can play Hang On in Room #222, and this can only be done now. This made my game crash, so make sure to save first. Either way, this will get you the achievement:

“To Be This Good Takes Ages.”

Defeating Dou Niu will get you the achievement:

“David and Goliath.”

The last thing you’ll do before leaving for Guilin is visit Lishao Tao and get the Demon’s Triangle scroll. You can use the scroll immediately after disembarking in Guilin.

If you agree with Shenhua to take the path where you can see the flowers, you’ll get the achievement:

“Flower Power.”

When you see the Shenmue tree in a cutscene, you’ll get the achievement:

“Tree Hugger.”

After you see the cutscene with the two mirrors, an achievement will unlock:

“Not Done Yet!”

Story-Based Achievements (Unmissable)

Baggage Claim – Get your bag back after it is stolen

After Wong gives you your bag back, this achievement will unlock.

Never Assume – Meet Lishao Tao

When you find out who Master Tao is, you’ll get this achievement.

Autumn In Wan Chai – Catch the leaves

When you catch three leaves in a row to pass the test to obtain the Wulinshu, you’ll get this achievement.

Another Fine Mess – Fall off a building with Ren

After passing the Command QTE in your race with Ren throughout the abandoned building, you’ll get this acheivement when you fall on the truck.

Nomad – Leave Hong Kong

This achievement is kinda buggy, and I had to reload a save to get it. This achievement will pop after you get on the bus for Kowloon. (Even though Kowloon is in Hong Kong, but I digress…)

Under Your Nose – Catch Yuan and rescue Zhang Shu Qin

After you kick in Yuan’s door with a Command QTE, you’ll unlock this achievement.

5 Star General – Find Yuanda Zhu

After solving the puzzle on the Buddha statue, you’ll get this achievement.

New Kid On The Block – Impress the Yellowhead scout, Yuandao Huo, with your fighting skills

After meeting up with the Yellowhead scout by Ren’s Hideout after defeating all three targets, you’ll get this achievement.

David And Goliath – Defeat Dou Niu

After defeating Dou Niu with the Counter-Elbow Assault in a Command QTE, you’ll get this achievement.

Tree Hugger – Find the Shenmue Tree

After seeing the Shenmue Tree in a cutscene, you’ll get this achievement.

Not Done Yet – Complete the game

Once you see the giant forms of the two mirrors in a cutscene, you’ll get this achievement.

Definitely Missable Achievements

Money For Nothing – Give money to the musicians at the beginning of the game.

At the beginning of the game, musicians will play for you and you can give them money. Give it to them and this achievement will unlock.

Big Spender – Have less than 50 dollars when your bag is stolen

This achievement will take you hours and hours. You have to spend all of your money before you even start to leave for Wan Chai. Spend your money on Capsule boxes and zippo lighters that you can sell back later, or else you’ll lose all your money and you won’t get this achievement. Once your bag is stolen, you’ll get this achievement. Happy times. Achievement for getting robbed.

Slippery Like An Eel – Chase and catch Wong in QTE

When you see Wong in the park and he tries to run off, succeed in a QTE chase against him. If you fail, you won’t get this achievement. After you catch him, it will unlock.

Good Samaritan – Straighten the man’s sign near the Come Over Guest House in Wan Chai

After leaving the Come Over Guest House for the first time to make some money, turn the corner and you’ll see a guy wanting to straighten a sign. Help a poor fellow out and you’ll get this achievement.

Back To School – Master the Wild Throw move from the Kung Fu school in Wan Chai

Once you find the slip of paper inside the Wulinshu, go back to Zhousan at the Guang Martial Arts School in the Green Market Quarter. He’ll teach you this move. Note that when he says to throw toward him, do so, or else you won’t get this achievement because you won’t have mastered the Wild Throw move. As soon as you’ve thrown him to his master, this achievement will pop.

Sweet Sorrow – Say goodbye to the 4 wude masters before leaving Hong Kong

See also:  Shenmue I & II - Capsule Toy Checklist

This achievement is phrased a bit odd. You have to say goodbye to everyone you’ve ever seen. This is Dalin, the guy you worked with at Fortune’s Pier (He is behind Warehouse #1), Fangmei in Room 207 of Da Yuan Apartments and the four Wude teachers (Zhousan is at Guang Martial Arts School in Green Market Plaza, Zhangyu is in Zhangyu Barber’s Hop in Lucky Charm Quarter on Three Blades Street, Jianmin is in Lotus Park in the South Carmain Quarter, and Guixiang is by the Yan Tin Apartments also in South Charmain Quarter.) Then go and talk to Hanhui in the Man Mo Temple, and finish off by talking to Lishao Tao, and you’ll get this achievement.

Flower Power – See the flowers with Shenhua
When Shenhua asks you if you want to take the detour with the flowers, say yes. It will unlock shortly afterward.

To Be This Good Takes Ages – Play all 4 arcade games

This one is harder than it sounds, because of how they’re seperated. Outrun and Space Harrier are in Wan Chai, and Afterburner and Hang On are in Kowloon. The two in Wan Chai are in the Golden Quarter in the Pine Arcade, and as for the two in Kowloon: one is in the Phoenix Building on your right when you’re going to fight Rob Stunt, while the other is on the 2nd floor of the Yellow Head Building in Room #222.

Missable – But Hard To – Achievements

Cartographer – Place a map marker

Okay, this is really stretching it as missable, but I guess if you’re in the final cutscene, you’ve missed it. Just press the throw button on your control menu when you’re not in battle and then press one of the other buttons to place a marker. Simple as that.

  • Apprentice – Learn your first new combat skill
  • Adept – Learn 5 combat skills
  • Expert – Learn 10 combat skills
  • Master – Learn 15 combat skills

Okay, so the Apprentice one actually isn’t missable but I wanted to put it with the rest. This is because you’ll always learn four (Counter Elbow Assault, Demon Drop, Predictive Explosion, and Iron Palm), so there’s no way to miss that. I was able to get this a little after entering Kowloon, and I’m pretty sure that’s the earliest you can get it. I’ve given more details in my bare-bones guide, but here listed are the 26 moves you can obtain.

  • Diagonal Wipe
  • Double Storm Kick
  • Dragon Spin
  • Heel Sweep
  • Horeshoe Kick
  • Machinegun Fist
  • Mantis Combo
  • Monkey Roll Drop
  • Oblique Air Kick
  • Oblique Slam
  • Rear Foot Sweep
  • Serpent Coil
  • Stepping Strike
  • Twin Palm Thrust
  • Brawling Uppercut
  • Counter Elbow Assault
  • Demon Drop
  • Demon’s Triangle
  • Diagonal Wipe
  • Hind Blow
  • Horeshoe Kick
  • Iron Palm
  • Lunging Strike
  • Mantis Combo
  • Predictive Explosion
  • Wild Throw

Challenger – Win an arm wrestling match
Strongarm – Win 5 arm wrestling matches

For these two achievements, you have to win five arm wrestling matches at any location. I personally got four wins at the beginning of the game (Jimenez Garcia) and my fifth from the area called Rooftop Fight off a guy named Nadam Begue. But there are 11 total fighters, and I’ve got a list of them right here.

Jimenez Garcia – Fighting Place (The warehouse at the beginning of the game) , Worker’s Pier, Aberdeen

  • Nadam Begue – Rooftop Fight, Worker’s Pier, Aberdeen
  • Agon Girei – Rooftop Fight, Worker’s Pier, Aberdeen
  • Uzun Temur – Rooftop Fight, Worker’s Pier, Aberdeen

(These three are all brothers in a group with difficulty level ascending from Nadam to Uzun.)

Bear Norton – Worker’s Pier, Aberdeen (Southeast Side)

Guston Hymer – Worker’s Pier, Aberdeen (an alleyway in between a few sales stands)

and then the following six are all in the Fighting Place, Stand Quarter, Kowloon

  • Jimenez Garcia (He missed you!)
  • Julio Santos
  • Muhammad Karim
  • Dimitri Levtchenko
  • Matthew Hopkins
  • Dory Gordie

Unexpected Visit – Visit a fortune teller

You can get this at the very beginning of the game. She’s the cute girl next to the entrance of Worker’s Pier that you go past when you round the corner to go into Worker’s Pier. Just get your fortune told, and you’ll get the achievement.
