Casting spells can turn the tide of battle in Songs Of Conquest. Whether you’re bolstering your allies, creating obstacles for your opponents to contend with, or just unleashing mystical attacks on the enemy, a well-placed spell often means the difference between victory and defeat.

The game’s magic system takes a little getting used to, especially since it affects not only your tactics but your overall army composition. Each faction has types of spells they can cast more reliably than others, and getting the spells you need forms a key part of the game’s overall strategy.

The Spellbook

Every Wielder in Songs Of Conquest has access to the same spells during battle, provided they have the necessary Essence to cast them. All the spells in the game are listed in the Spellbook, which can be accessed at any time by clicking the scroll icon. From here, you can see the costs and effects of every spell.

Spells are divided into six categories – one for each type of Essence, and a sixth for spells that draw from multiple Essences. As Wielders level up, they may gain skills that enhance their proficiency with a given Essence type. Not only will they begin to generate that type of Essence on their own at the start of each round, but their spells using their preferred Essence type will be more powerful.

When you bring up the Spellbook, it shows the spells’ effects as cast by the currently-selected Wielder. This helps you assess a given Wielder’s capabilities, as leveling up an Essence skill can make a spell much stronger than the same spell cast by a Wielder without that skill.

How To Gain Essence

Essence is generated for your Wielder constantly throughout a battle. At the beginning of each round, your Wielder will usually generate Essence automatically based on their skills, artifacts, and any global effects you may have in play. The bulk of your Essence, however, will come from your units themselves.

Each unit generates one or more points of Essence every time they take a turn. The amount and type a unit generates is listed among their stats. For this reason, the units you include in a Wielder’s army will have a dramatic effect on the spells that become available. If you don’t have any Order units, for example, you’ll have a tough time casting Order spells without another way to get the necessary Essence.

Some spells and other effects change the amount of Essence a unit produces on their turn. By strategically applying these effects, you can enhance your own Essence production or deprive the opponent of resources – possibly even preventing them from casting a much-needed spell!

The spells that you currently have the necessary Essence to cast will be listed at the edge of your army’s side of the screen. You can also bring up the Spellbook to plan your Essence budget and get ready for spells in upcoming turns.

Once you’ve selected a spell, casting it is as simple as clicking on its intended target(s)! Master the magical forces of Songs Of Conquest, and you’ll soon be forging an arcane empire of your very own.
