STAR OCEAN THE SECOND STORY R Best Equipment

Best equipment for each character. WIP, as Star Ocean The Second Story R has added new weapons and may have changed other things. I may eventually add information for all weapons and armor, as well as how to craft/find them.

STAR OCEAN THE SECOND STORY R Best Equipment

The names of the equipment in this guide are based on the PSP version of the game, as Star Ocean 2 R is based upon that version. Though, because I’ve played this game since its original PS1 release, I may accidentally slip in the PS1 name of a piece of equipment. I will change any names that are incorrect.

This is, in my opinion, the best equipment you can have for each character. This guide does not currently cover the new Ultimate Weapons you can get in the R version of the game; I will add them later.

There will be minor spoilers (names of dungeons and towns) in this guide, but that’s it.

Equipment

This section has all of the equipment I’ll be referring to in this guide, along with how to craft or obtain each piece. I’ve put the crafting requirements here so I don’t have to repeat myself for characters that use the same equipment.

All items are made through the Blacksmith skill.

You’ll need two items to make most of this equipment, the Magical Rasp and Lezard’s Flask.

You can buy Lezard’s Flask in Centropolis, or steal it from Welch in a Private Action. The Magical Rasp is bought from the Secret Store/Shady Store on Nede.

If an item requires the Magical Rasp, I will list it. If you don’t see it mentioned, then you’ll be able to create it without needing the Magical Rasp. You’ll also need Lezard’s Flask, but only one item on this list requires it.

You may not get the weapon or armor that you’re trying to make on the first try, since there is always a bit of random chance in Item Creation. But each item combination only has a set number of things it can create, so just save before crafting and reload if you don’t get the results you want.

Armor

  • Reflective Armor: Orichalcum
  • Robe of Ishtar: Moonstone with Magical Rasp.
  • Battle Suit: Pickpocket off of Ernest during Private Actions in Mars Village. You can also get two in the Maze of Tribulations.
  • Mithril Coat: Mithril
  • Eagle Shawl: Rune Metal

Helm/Hat

  • Odin’s Helm: Orichalcum with Magical Rasp.
  • Tiara of Isis: Moonstone with Magical Rasp.
  • Tiara of the Arc: Found in the Field of Wisdom and North City.
  • Dueling Helm: Damascus with Magical Rasp.

Shield

  • Shield of Athena: Mithril with Magical Rasp.
  • Hand of Kali: Moonstone with Magical Rasp.
  • Shield of Algol: Damascus with Magical Rasp.
  • Rune Buckler: Rune Metal
  • Gauntlets of Air: Buy from the Secret Store on Nede.

Greaves/Feet

  • Star Greaves: Meteorite
  • Witch’s Boots: Moonstone
  • Rune Shoes: Rune Metal

Rena Lanford

One of two main characters, so you’ll have access to her in both scenarios.

Weapons

Fallen Hope

Obtained: You’ll receive this through the story.

Rena doesn’t really get access to good weaponry, as her magic is her primary focus.

Equipment

  • Robe of Ishtar
  • Hand of Kali/Shield of Algol
  • Tiara of Isis
  • Witch’s Boots

Claude C. Kenny

One of two main characters, so you’ll have access to him in both scenarios.

Weapons

Aeterna

To make this weapon, do the following.

  • 1) Customize the Deadly Edge with Mithril to get the Sword of Minos.
  • 2) Customize the Sword of Minos with Mithril to get the Aeterna.

You get the Deadly Edge while participating in the Lacuer tournament, provided you made it to Dias. You don’t have to win to get the sword.

What makes this sword especially good is that you can get it very early in the game, and it can carry you all the way to the end if you’re uninterested in completing the Maze of Tribulations or getting his Ultimate Weapon.

You aren’t guaranteed to get the Sword of Minos or Aeterna when combining them with Mithril, so you should save first and reload if you aren’t successful.

Holy Sword Farewell

Drops from Phoenix in the Maze of Tribulations or a random drop from wearing Santa Boots.

This is a good weapon to have in between Aeterna and Levantine. You can get it before ever setting foot in the Maze of Tribulations, but I’d just skip it and go straight to the Levantine. Though, if you do get it to drop from Santa Boots, all the better.

Levantine

Drops from the Wise Sorcerer in the Maze of Tribulations.

Much stronger than Aeterna, but you won’t get true use out of it until Claude has taken some damage, as the lower his HP is, the more damage he will do with the sword. Its raw damage score is still higher than both Aeterna and Holy Sword Farewell, though.
