ADA Quest Guide

ADA is a special AI NPC in The Outer Worlds. NPCs are not able to be controlled by the player, but interacted with and are often a part of Quests within the game. Some will play a larger role than others, and some can even be recruited as Companions.

The Unreliable comes equipped with an advanced AI capable of not only controlling the navigation and communication systems but also adapting and learning from the ship’s operators to better anticipate their needs

According to pre-release interviews: During gameplay, players can expect ADA to change, grow and act differently based on player choices for dialogue and Quests, Factions and Reputation.

ADA Location
ADA can be found inside the Unreliable.

  1. The Cleaning Machine
  2. The Distress Signal
  3. Long Distance
  4. Kept Secret But Not Forgotten
  5. Brave New World
  6. Space-Crime Continuum (Faction Quest)

1. The Cleaning Machine Walkthrough

This quest can be unlocked after you have left the Emerald Vale and are on the main quest Passage to Anywhere. Go up the ladder of the ship toward the captain quarters and then take the stairs up to a further level and inspect the inactive machine in the supply closet.

Speak with ADA on board the ship and she will tell you to read the captain’s logs on the computer in the captain’s quarters about the machine. Back in your quarters, look for entries marked “SAM” and read them to gain 6300 XP and you’ll learn that you need to find an Acid Steeper, which requires you to travel to Roseway in Terra 2.

Travel to Roseway Gardens and find the Storage Facility, located South from the landing pad. Within it you’ll fight several Marauder enemies. You’ll find an Armory Note and learn that you need Storage Facility Passcode to get into the area with the parts. You can find the passcode by hacking the terminal in Auntie-Biotics Lab.

Once inside the door, pick up Acid Steeper to update the quest and get 7200xp. A nearby locker also has Reconditioned Exo-Helmet.

While you’re here, check out the nearby terminal to discover Roseway Secrets for The Distress Signal. and pick up the weapon schematics needed for the quest Vulcan’s Hammer.

Return to the Unreliable to finish modifying SAM by interacting with it on the 2nd Floor. You’ll get 7200xp, and SAM will ask you if you’d like to register. Say yes and then it’ll take off and patrol the floor.

2. The Distress Signal Walkthrough

You obtain this quest if you ask Gladys to detail her opportunity when looking for a Nav Key during Passage to Anywhere. You will be asked listen to a Distress Call, but this can only be done from the Unreliable and it will be inaccessible until you have talked to Udom Bedford and resolved your ship’s impounding.

Once you can use the ship, go to ADA and ask her to play the Distress Call. You will receive 2000 XP and unlock the quest The Doom That Came to Roseway. You will now also be able to travel to Roseway in Terra 2.

Enter Roseway

After landing at Roseway Landing Pad, you’ll make your way through a desolate street and enter Roseway proper. Here you will meet Berke, a tarmac guard. He says Anton Crane is in charge, and that somehow Raptidons got loose and attacked the town.

If you speak with Orson Shaw and offer to help then you will get the objective to get a hold of his weapon plans. These can be found in the Storage Facility to the southeast of Roseway. Head there, defeat the marauders and loot it from the basement wall.

Head to Roseway Communications Room and you can meet Anton Crane, who sent the distress call. He reveals that his work might not be entirely legal, so corporate cannot know of what has happened. You can intimidate (25) to get him to tell you what is going on. He’s tasked with formulating new and improved dental gel, and they accidentally discovered an appetite suppresant. He claims a group of malcontents attacked them, freed the Raptidons and stole his research. You will get 3300xp for agreeing to help, and obtain Anton’s Lab Keycard and Anton’s Pass Code.

He will also mention you should not kill the Raptidon mother, and that the old lab has Jameson, his protege. Agree to find him and you’ll obtain the quest By His Bootstraps.

Go back outside and you can meet Weldon, who will not say anything quite useful, and then enter the apartments outside and go upstairs to unlock Anton’s room. You can browse his terminal to read his personal journal and learn more about him and his motivations. There’s also a workbench and vending machine nearby. Downstairs, you can talk to Vaughn Cortes, who seems eager to get back to work. He hints that he left something important at the lab. Offer to help and you’ll learn he’s harvesting Raptor Musk for an aphrodisiac. He asks you don’t say anything to Anton. Accept and you’ll receive the quest The Amateur Alchemist.

Leave town and go to Roseway Garden. You’ll be attacked by a group of Raptidons as you approach Auntie-Biotics Lab 0013, where you can do By His Bootstraps. Then make your way southeast towards the Cover Lab. Inside you’ll need to speak with Cassandra O’Malley. You can kill her or make a deal with her, but she has Auntie Cleo’s Research Data.

Near Cassandra through a door you’ll find Vaughn’s Research and the Unique Weapon: Rapti-prod. Use the terminal to determine what do with the data, but if you want it then you won’t destroy it.

You can complete this quest by giving Gladys all or none of the secrets, though if you are going to give her one the best one to do is the toothpaste because it will cause you to complete The Doom That Came to Roseway. Whereas, either of the other two will Botch their Quests and you will gain no XP, only Bit Cartridges.

3. Long Distance Walkthrough

  • This quest is obtained by speaking with Sophia Akande on Byzantium after completing the quest The Demolished Woman.
  • This quest is also available after stealing the chemicals Phineas wants from Byzantium for the quest The City and the Stars.

Head to Phineas’ Laboratory and plant the tracking signal by using the terminal to gain 27,000 XP. Then speak with Ada aboard the Unreliable and you will be contacted by Sophia. She’ll reward you with 27,000 more XP and you’ll lose Negative Reputation with The Board. She’ll then ask you to speak with her on Byzantium by using Adjutant Akande’s Landing Pad. Go in and Guard Esparza will let you through. If you speak with her there you will gain a further 27,000 XP.

  • During your conversation, depending on what you have done before arriving here (if you got this quest after The City and the Stars), you will learn the Emerald Vale plague is a result of malnutrition, and that the Roseway research for “Diet Toothpaste” was for this purpose as well. She will then ask you to wipe out Edgewater. Refusing to do so and telling her to go to hell botches the quest and makes everyone within the building aggressive. You’ll get the Foundation quest at this point from her.
  • Sophia will then give you the quest Signal Point in Space and tell you to speak with Percival for your reward and Nav Key. This will net you 100,000 XP, 2000 Bit Cartridges and a lot of Reputation with The Board

If you speak with Phineas and let him know about the tracking signal, he’ll ask you to plant a corrupt signal to buy him some time. If you do this on the terminal you will gain 27,000 XP. Sophia will also not be aware that you corrupted the signal, and you’ll gain another 27,000 XP. Speak with her a gain on Byzantium to gain the same quest and receive the same XP.

4. Kept Secret But Not Forgotten Walkthrough

You’ll gain this quest automatically after the completion of The City and the Stars or the Foundation quest.

Regardless of who you are working for you will now need to travel to The Hope. Once there ADA will tell you that you need to patch her into the Hope’s Communication Systems and you’ll need to reroute power to the Hope’s Skip Drive. You’ll get 41000xp

Once you’ve boarded The Hope, head right and locate the terminal there. This will reroute power to the Hope’s Skip Drive. Ahead is Quincy Duncan, speak with him. If you have completed Foundation he’ll tell you that there is a message from Sophia Akande ahead. He’ll also tell you the automechanicals think they are intruders and are attacking. You can ask him for an ID Cartridge, but you’ll have to Lie (50), Intimidate (80), Persuade (50) to get him to unlock the door on the left-hand side behind him. Inside you’ll find a UDL Identity Cartridge.

Head into the restricted area, and visit the terminal through a door on the left to get some lore about the Hope. Forward through the next door and then another door on the right is another terminal that will tell you about how the Skip Drive failed The Hope and they were running out of food to make it to Halcyon. There is also a UDL Identity Cartridge on the shelf if you need it. Across the way is another terminal in a room with a locked door (75) that has a transcript of people having sex on board the ship.

Head into the next room where the terminal is and use it to learn about the amount of people in stasis. Head through the door on the left and defeat the automechanicals there. Then use the terminal to patch ADA into the comm systems. Use the other terminal to get some more information about what happened to The Hope. Then head across the hall through the locked door (50). If you looted the Hope Bridge Keycard from the dead soldier then you won’t need to pick it.

There is an elevator on the right here and another locked door (50) on the other side of the room. Inside is a Mega Sprat and some smaller Sprats. Defeat them and loot the containers, and read the log for some chilling information. Then head up the elevator. Once up the elevator, head right and defeat the automechanicals. Here you’ll find a terminal in the crew quarters that tells you the last days of the Hope’s crew, and another one that tells you one of the crew started waking colonists to eat them because they were starving. Proceeding past this point will fail the quest Foundation if you have not completed it.

When you reach the ship’s computer and you can read about what happened to the Hope’s crew. Patch ADA through the Hope’s computer system and decide where to Skip The Hope. It is advised you save here so that you can do multiple endings. You can take over the Skip yourself and you will die granting the Trophy/Achievement Sunburn. Or you can take it to Tartarus if you’ve completed Foundation, and to Terra 2 if you’ve completed The City and the Stars.

Terra 2 Destination
If you Skip The Hope to Terra 2 you will gain the Trophy/Achievement Lost and Found. Head back to the Unreliable and travel to Phineas’ Lab. Phineas will contact you on the ship and he’ll let you know he’s under attack from The Board. Fight your way through the Corporate Troops and use the terminal to update the quest that you need to search the area for his passcode, which can be looted from the dead Cystypig next to his terminal (Phineas’ Terminal Passcode)

You can read about Phineas on the terminal and he will mention a hidden panel with a package for you. Head into his living quarters. You’ll find the Unique Weapon: Phin’s Phorce and the panel which contains a Tartarus Navkey. This will complete the quest and begin Brave New World.

Tartarus Destination
If you Skip The Hope to Tartarus, you will need to head back to the Unreliable. Once onboard Chairman Rockwell will contact you and tell you that Phineas has taken Sophia hostage and freed the prisoners on Tartarus. This will conclude this quest and begin Brave New World.

5. Brave New World Walkthrough

This quest is obtained by Skipping The Hope to Terra 2 during the Kept Secret But Not Forgotten quest or by Skipping The Hope to Tartarus.

Terra 2 Route

ADA will warn you that you should finish anything else you need to do before heading there, and you can ask your crew what they think. ADA will then once again speak with you and you will receive a transmission from a Corporate Trooper telling you that you will be executed and your vessel seized. You can Intimidate (70) or Lie (70) to get him to back off and gain a Labyrinth Security Personnel ID Cartridge. You will also find out that the Groundbreaker has docked as well.

Once on the planet make your way to the facility. If you helped Junlei on Groundbreaker her forces will help you assault the facility. Make your way to the elevator and head down. Once there, head into the restricted area and head towards the nav point. There are a ton of guards here and a bunch of loot. You’ll need to head through the door at the top of the lift/ladder. Immediately on your left is a locked door (55) that has a terminal inside with information on the procedure of the Pit. The nearby door will take you to the lift up. If you have Intimidate (90), Heavy Weapons (60) and 2-Handed Melee (90) and you can threaten her. You can then Lie (100) or Pesuade (90) Science (90) her. You can then Intimidate (100) or Temperament her. If you make it through all of these she will stand down and give you back Phineas Welles.

Make your way to the nav point and loot The Chairman’s Key, then use it to free Phineas. This will conclude the quest and end the game.

Tartarus Route
Then you’ll have a dialogue with your crew on the Unreliable. Head to Tartarus and you will be contacted by a Corporate Trooper asking if you’re the back up. You can Persuade (30) or Initmidate (30) him to get the guards to help you.

Once on the planet make your way to the facility. If you helped Junlei on Groundbreaker her forces will help you assault the facility. Make your way to the elevator and head down. Immediately on your left is a locked door (55) that has a terminal inside with information on the procedure of the Pit. The nearby door will take you to the lift up. If you didn’t head through the locked door, you’ll head right, but eventually end up in the same place. You can explore further here before using the lift to find another terminal in a room that allows you to Deliver Pacification Gas, but you’ll need the password for it. Speak to Melody you can Lie (100) to her to get it. Using it will wipe out all the prisoners on this level if you have not killed them already.

You have a chance to ask Phineas what he thinks has happened – take the opportunity and he’ll say more about the disappeared frigate and lost contact with Earth. He will also revealed he experimented on The Hope’s colonists and is burdened by his failures.

6. Space-Crime Continuum Walkthrough

This quest is obtained by taking the job with Lilya Hagen aboard the Groundbreaker after you’ve gained access to Stellar Bay on Monarch.

Head outside to the fishery docks in Stellar Bay of Monarch and loot the corpse there in the corner. This will provide you with a Bloody Note that has a passcode on it. Take the note to Catherine Malin in Fallbrook.

Make your way to Fallbrook, visiting Amber Heights for several quests in the process. Talk to Mortimer Bell near the entrance and, if you’re doing Space-Crime Continuum, ask him where to find Catherine Malin, and you’ll gain Sublight Salvage & Shipping reputation.

Go to meet Catherine and tell her you’re here to fix the problem. She says you must syphon the gas from Cascadia’s lab into one of your ship’s fuel tanks. She warns you the town is overrun by Marauders and the lab is swarmed with mantisaurs. You can mention that Nyoka can kill them or Ellie can drug them. She will tell you technical skills are needed, you can mention Parvati or Vicar Max. You’re to take the gas to the Groundbreaker once you obtain it. Finish the dialogue and earn 5000xp

Catherine has an extra job, however. You can pick it up now. She wants you to take Clive Lumbergh’s boarst factory, owner dead or alive. You can kill him or sabotage the factory. This unlocks the side quest Slaughterhouse Clive. Speak to Duncan Elley for an ID if you wish to sneak in. You’ll have to Persuade (50), Lie (50) or Intimidate (50) to get one.

Clive is located inside C&P Boarst Factory to the southwest of Fallbrook. If you can reach him and convince him to work with Catherine then you can bring his proposition to her. Or you can just kill him. If you tried to get them to work together when you speak with Catherine you need a Persuade (50) or Lie (100) to get her to do it.

Head to Cascadia and interact with the terminal near the sealed door containing what you seek (it’s inside a building). You need to override the system with the password and the door will reveal a lift that takes you to Rizzo Secret Laboratory. Be sure to look around Cascadia before you head inside, as you can find Zora’s Executive Review on another terminal inside Rizzo’s. This will allow you to use the terminal at the locked gate to Cascadia.

Once inside the lab you’ll gain 5000 XP, and you’ll come across a security robot, but you can get by with Lie (60). To the left of the robots there’s a room with a terminal. Use it to signal ADA to land, and your quest will update and grant you 5000 XP. Continue exploring by taking the route left from the entrance. You’ll pass a locked door with some loot inside and come to a room with several Mantisaur.

Following the path-ridden trap without Mantisaur, that has Mechanical Guardian MK 2 instead. You’ll have to dodge mines and ray tripwires unless you have lockpicking 100. Watch out for the steam and the mines on the walls as well! This is the way you must take if you want to use ventilation to solve your bug problem
Defeat the mantisaur and climb the ladder then interact with the terminal to align the fuel. After that, initiate Alta-Vitae Gas transfer – you’ll learn this terminal is not allowed and you have to make it to another one. Earn 5000xp

Go down the ladder and open the nearby door. There’s more Mantisaur to kill, and a creepy shrine to Dr. Thomas Lynwood Ryall to observe. Go to the far end of the room and you can take a right to loot some items and read a terminal, and then take the opposite direction to fight a Mantiqueen. The terminal up the stairs past the queen is the one you need for your quest. Pick to connect storage tanks to the landing pad refueling system. You can now Engineering (40), Hack (60) or Overload the systems. You’ll gain 5000xp.

While you are inside the lab, find the Mind Control Ray for the quest Weapons from the Void. Go toward the lift and look right – there’s a gap to jump across, leading to a ladder, another jump and another ladder. You’ll find a dead scientist and a safe that contains Mind Control Ray. (3500xp)

Take the lift out and you’ come out by a group of Mantisaur on the opposite side of the locked gate from the main town. You can head to the Unreliable and back to the Groundbreaker to complete the quest by talking to Lylya Hagen at SubLight. (5000xp)

Finishing the quest gives you 20000xp, SubLight Salvage & Shipping Reputation Up, 2188 Bit Cartridge. You can Persuade (100) for 2300xp and 500 Bit Cartridge. If you completed Slaughterhouse Clive you’ll receive further SubLight Salvage & Shipping reputation, and Lilya will ask if the swine gave you any strange looks.

You’ll also unlock the quest to move in and commandeer a decommissioned station as a SubLight Salvage & Shipping Remote Station. Accept to obtain the quest The Ice Palace and obtain Override Cartridge, which allows you to travel to the quest destination.
