Hey everyone! I have seen so much confusion among my friends and coworkers, on top of my own, about random perks and how they function in the skill trees. The game explains them in a way I did not understand, on top of others not taking the time to go through the tutorials, which I do not blame them, SO! I have taken a few hours of my time respeccing the skill trees and checking it all out!
Family Skill Trees (Random Perks Explained)
The Basics
OKAY! SO, firstly, all examples have been done through Leatherface, as he is the character I main and had the points specced into from the start.
To my knowledge, all players share the exact same layouts on each specific character! ( please correct me if I wrong here!)
Here we have the fully completed tree, each path branches into different skills, and will block off based upon whatever you decide to purchase, it’s clear what will be blocked apart from a few little weird exceptions but you’ll see it when it happens.
At the bottom there are three paths to pick from, each starting with the type of perk that path specializes in (savagery, blood harvesting, or endurance), but they tend to able to link up with the paths closest in starting direction.
Each path can lead to 3-5 random perks, along with the special perks you can see and plan ahead to get ahold of, as well as a hefty number of skillup points, around 25 for every path, and these are used to level your base stats.
Random Perks
This is the part I was most confused and excited to learn about! So, Every path you take can lead to 3-5 random perks, this is universal as far as I can see on the family side of trees. (feel free to correct!)
Example below, Red encloses every possible node going this route, alone with blue showing the random perks along with the cut off points you could not progress past!
I initially respecced for nearly and hour trying to get Fired Up on the savagery tree before noticing the pattern the same exact perks showing up again and again, and to me it wasn’t made clear why or what I could do to get what I want, but it makes sense! For some balancing in builds, they would lock certain perks to certain sides for a reason: to keep you from pairing super strong perks together such as Big Swings (at max 15% more damage with double stamina drain) with Fired Up (90% less cooldown before stamina regen), Making you do more damage and have nearly no down time between stamina cycles.
Now! It does not seem to matter which directions you go, or what order you upgrade things, you will always pull from a pool of 7 or 8 perks, (7 being an exception to Leatherface? I have tried for over an hour and never gotten an 8th)
Some instances have led to me only getting 3-5 of these perks on certain nodes, example, the top left most node for Leatherface only gave me Vial-ent, Activated, Punishment, Hysterical Strength, and Tenderizer, despite his pool having 2 more possible perks. But in my testing, you have the potential to pull any combination you may want no matter what, so long as you fill the path, although you may have to respec many times but the potential is there.
For example let us say I want 2 perks possible from a Family Member’s pool, no matter what way you go or path you choose you can pull both of these perks from the random perk nodes.
Each Family Member has a list of perks that are in the pool of random perks, they’ll be listed Below per family member along with their completed trees! The random perks are all just perks unavailable on that member’s skill tree, at least that’s what it is meant to be, but there are exceptions, and cross checking is a pain in the ass, especially with inconsistency so I have compiled it for you all!
