Contract Strange Beast Walkthrough: Skellige Isles Witcher Contracts

Start Location: This quest can be acquired via a notice posted on the Larvik Notice board on Hindarsfjall, the easternmost island of the Skellige Isles.

After grabbing the side-quest from the notice board in Larvik, you can start it by speaking with an NPC named Thorleif by the weapon/armour enhancement areas in town. You’ll learn that his son is missing and it’s up to us to find out what happened.

Following the conversation, make your way over to the northern side of town and speak with Sverre he and his buddy here about the contract. Once you have quizzed him using all the available conversation options, our objectives will update.

At this point, we’ll want to make our way to the objective marker along the road to the west of Larvik and around halfway to the next town of Lofoten. After arriving at the site of the attack, examine the investigation area. Activate Geralt’s Witcher Senses and explore the area. You can inspect the following points of interest:

  • The red clay on the ground behind the cart.
  • The corpse by the cart on the southern side of the road.
  • The pool of blood on the northern side of the road opposite the cart.
  • A set of footprints beside the pool of blood (will appear after examining the other items of interest).

Follow the footprints away from the attack site and a short distance into the woods. You’ll come across a small cave. Drop down inside.

The initial tunnel is filled with poison gas, so make sure you have Geralt equipped with AARD or IGNI (AARD is preferable in the cramped space) and use the signs to clear the gas as you progress. You’ll also encounter a Nekker or two as you go, so keep an eye out for them and stay away from the gas!

Eventually, the tunnel will empty into a small, open cavern at the end. Drop down to the floor and fight off the 4-5 Nekkers that will attack at this point. After defeating them, a short scene will play and a boss fight will commence.

Note: The spelling of the boss’s name is different between how it appears in the bestiary menu (Hagubman) and how it appears next to its health bar (Hagumban). I’ve elected to use the bestiary’s spelling.

Boss: Hagubman (Nekker Warrior)

The boss Nekker is quite similar to those you have fought in the game so far, he just has significantly more health and can do a lot more damage with his attacks. He performs the same general melee swipes and leap attacks as you would see from a regular Nekker, and by this stage you should be adept at blocking/dodging these!

At several points during the fight Hagubman will burrow into the earth and summon a group of four level 13-14 Nekkers. We’ll be required to defeat the group of Nekkers before the boss will return. The boss himself can be knocked down by a blast of AARD, stunned by AXII, slowed by YRDEN and will take damage from IGNI. His biggest weakness however is Northern Wind Bombs which will dish out significant damage.

Once the Nekker Warrior is dead, loot the body for the Nekker Warrior Trophy, Nekker Warrior Mutagen and any other goodies it was carrying.

With Hagubman now pushing up daisies, we can mosey on back to Larvik and speak with Thorleif once again to end the side-quest. During the conversation you can ask for more Crowns if you wish, or accept the reward as is.

Note: For completing the side-quest, you’ll earn 200XP and 390 Crowns.
