Contract Lord of the Wood Walkthrough

This quest can be acquired via a notice posted on the Cunny of the Goose Notice board.

After grabbing this side-quest from the Cunny of the Goose notice board, you’ll need find and speak with Brean Hotsch. He’s a Halfling that can be found inside the Inn itself, standing by the bar. He’ll flesh out some additional details regarding the contract and update your objectives.

Once you are through with him, we’ll need to talk to a witness to the incident. Fortunately, he is also hanging out in the inn here and can be found on the far side of the room. Speak with the Lumberjack for some additional information regarding the contract.

Following the conversations, make your way to the objective marker on the map to the southwest of the city of Novigrad. The area of interest we need to reach is right by the ‘Logger’s Hut’ fast travel marker (if you have that unlocked).

After arriving at the logging camp, examine the investigation area. Activate Geralt’s Witcher Senses and explore the area. You can inspect the following points of interest:

The wagon tracks just outside of the hut.

After examining the wagon tracks, a trail will appear along the road nearby. Follow the wagon tracks until you find the wagon itself. Note that you’ll want to watch out for Nekkers as you go as there are quite a few hanging about en route.

When you arrive at the site of the attack at the wagon, examine the investigation area. Activate Geralt’s Witcher Senses and explore the area. You can inspect the following points of interest:

  • The three bodies by the back of the wagon.
  • Blood stains on the ground to the left of the road.
  • You can follow the blood stains to find another dwarf corpse.
  • Claw marks on the rock, just to the left of the road.
  • The humanoid footprints heading down the road ahead of the wagon.
  • You can follow the footprints to find another dwarf corpse.

Once you have examined all of the points of interest listed above, your objectives will update.

Note: At this point, you’ll earn 25XP.

We’ll now need to examine four objective markers on the map to find a Leshen’s Totem. Each of these markers is associated with a group of crows. You’ll need to approach each group of crows with Geralt’s Witcher senses active to determine whether or not they are related to the Totem. For me, the easternmost objective marker on the map was the one that led me to the Totem.

Once you have located the Totem, rest up and prepare yourself for a fight. When you are ready to begin, pull out a sword and cut the totem down (or blast it with AARD) to trigger a boss fight.

Boss: Kernun (Leshen)

The Leshen is a tricky fight due to its ability to teleport around the area by transforming into a flock of crows and moving from place to place. Despite having some fairly heavy hitting melee attacks if you get in close, the Leshen will for the most part keep its distance. This is because from range it has several damaging attacks. It will frequently pummel the ground to summon roots that will emerge below Geralt causing a good deal of damage if it hits as well as sending its swarm of crows to attack.

Fortunately, the Leshen is relatively slow and aside from the crow swarm attack, his other moves are quite obvious and telegraphed in such a way as to be easy to avoid. The other element you’ll want to be aware of in this fight is that there are often Wolves roaming around this section of the woods and they may wander in to attack you during the fight – so keep your eyes open for them!

The trick to defeating the Leshen is using a combination of IGNI and Dimetirium Bombs to damage the boss quickly. AARD will knock him back temporarily, opening him up for some follow up melee attacks and YRDEN will slow his movements.

The fight is a case of avoiding the boss’s attacks, getting in close to let off a blast IGNI or a Dimetirium Bomb or two before he teleports. Chase him down again and repeat the process until the Leshen falls.

Once Kernun is dead loot its body for the Leshen Trophy, Leshen Resin and Leshen Mutagen along with any other items of interest it is carrying around.

With your new Leshen Trophy in Geralt’s possession, return to Brean at the Cunny of the Goose inn to hand in the side-quest.

Note: At this point, you’ll earn 250XP and 195 Crowns.
