Witcher 3 Gwent Playing Innkeeps Walkthrough

Gwent Playing Innkeeps Walkthrough

This quest can be acquired via a notice posted on the Golden Sturgeon Notice board in Novigrad or by challenging one of the participating NPCs.

As with the other Gwent side-quests ‘Gwent: Playing Innkeeps’ require you to track down and play Gwent against a series of three increasingly difficult opponents. As you approach each of the challengers, you need to speak with them to start a match.

You can find the Gwent players associated with this side-quest in the following locations:

Stjepan

Location: Found in the Alchemy Inn in Oxenfurt.

Stjepan uses a Nilfgaardian Empire deck with some high value siege cards and will use Spy cards and Decoys readily. He has a number of Medics in his deck as well, so prepare to see some cards over and over again! He’s also a fan of weather cards so expect to see at least one or two of those when things start going south for him. With a well-constructed Northern Realms deck featuring some Decoys, Heroes and Spy/Medic cards, you should be able to beat him at his own game and out-manoeuvre him. It’s also a wise move to switch your leader variant to Foltest with the ability to cast clear weather to help out if you get in a bind in the later rounds.

Defeating him will earn you the ‘Yennefer of Vengenberg’ Gwent card.

Note: For beating the Stjepan you’ll earn 25XP.

After defeating Stjepan in Oxenfurt, he’ll update your objectives with another pair of innkeepers to beat – Olivier at the Kingfisher Inn in Novigrad and the innkeeper at the Inn at the Crossroads. Let’s head to the Inn at the Crossroads first.

Innkeep

Location: Found in the Inn at the Crossroads, western Velen.

Like Stjepan, the Innkeep uses a Nilfgaardian Empire deck with some high value Siege/Ranged cards. He’ll usually try to link together some unit cards with Tight Bond and try to overpower you with lots of Siege weapons. He’ll occasionally use Spy and Medic cards, but not as readily as Stjepan did. With a well-constructed Northern Realms deck featuring some Decoys, Heroes (you should have Yennefer in it by now as well!) and Spy/Medic cards, you should be able to beat him at his own game and out-manoeuvre him. It’s also a wise move to switch your leader variant to Foltest with the ability to cast clear weather to help out if you get in a bind in the later rounds.

Defeating him will earn you the ‘Menno Coehhoorn’ Gwent card.

Note: For beating the Innkeep you’ll earn 25XP.

Finally, lets head to Novigrad for the final challenger…

Olivier

Location: Found in The Kingfisher Inn off Hierarch’s Square in central Novigrad.

This fellow can be quite tricky to start with as he plays with a Monsters deck filled with Muster units and he’ll have the full collection of Crones, Arachas, Nekkers and Ghouls. The trick to beating him is to try to get him to use as many Musters as possible early on – use high level units and Decoys (if possible) to get him to overcommit in the first round. He’ll also use quite a few Weather cards, so if you are playing Northern Realms, be sure to choose the Foltest leader card that can cast Clear Weather.

Defeating him will earn you the ‘Tibor Eggebracht’ Gwent card.

Note: If you fail to play and beat Olivier at Gwent before completing Triss’s side-quest ‘Now or Never’ (and you made the choice to help the Mages) – he’ll now be dead. Fortunately, you can still find the unique Gwent Card ‘Tibor Eggebracht’ in the room just to the right of the bar. It is lootable from a small lockbox atop a chest of drawers just inside the door.

Note: For beating Olivier you’ll earn 25XP.

After defeating all three innkeepers and/or acquiring their unique cards, you’ll complete the side-quest.
