Man, so many forest talker sidequests… I’m going to run out of file names for the pictures. To trigger this one, examine the locked door under the stairs in the abandoned mine.

So this is a three-digit combination lock, like the safes in-game. While the code is always the same, you have to find all three clues to even access the padlock.

The first clue, which is oddly the last number in the combination, is found right next to the elevator crank.

The second clue is split into two parts. The first involves finding the note on the dead body next to the grate and lever that you come across during Chapter 3.

Reading it will tell you that you need to get to the second floor and find an X. Well, the X is right next to the dead body and toolbox that has the bolt cutters.

Approaching it causes Will to automatically start focusing on a flickering light in the distance. There’s not some hidden writing, but pay attention to how many times the light flashes.

The last clue is a pain in the butt. To get it, head down the mining pit on floor 2, circled below. At the bottom, you’ll find a dead body. Search him for the final Forest Talker note.

The annoying part is that the note doesn’t actually tell you the number. No, instead you’re supposed to have paid attention to the signs all through the mine and noted which letters have been crossed out, like so.

Then you have to (presumably) unscramble the letters into a number. Ridiculous.

Now, I have not seen a single person actually figure out the puzzle this way. Instead, they use the usual method of opening combination locks in the game and just slowly move the dial until the lock opens. Anyways, head back to the wooden door and input the code: 12-7-18

Walk inside to complete the sidequest. There’s a fair amount of canned food and some gunpowder, but the main prize is the combat boots. There’s also a rifle and and ammunition, which is good if you used most of yours getting rid of timberwolves. Plus a few noisemakers.
